NIGHTMARE AT CARLTON INN MIDWAY

If I could give a ZERO I would. This was the worst MOTEL ( not even a hotel) that I have ever seen!!! I paid for this room online, including cancellation insurance as we arrived in Chicago. I called the hotel for a shuttle to be told that the shuttle was out of order but that a driver would pick us up in a car. First of all when I called the " hotel", no one answered, after which I received a call from an unknown number. The person on the other end said he was calling from Carlton Inn Midway on his personal cell phone because the phones were not working. I should have taken this as a VERY BAD sign, but as we had arrived very late and it was snowing I felt that I could overlook this and took a chance. We arrived at the hotel and as soon as we entered the lobby, the smell was so horrific, a combination of filth, cigarettes and pine sol. We were given a key and walked into the room we were assigned. I had asked for a first story room since my sister had a broken foot and was having trouble walking with her orthopedic boot. We had to walk up several steps in the pouring snow to walk into a most disgusting room. The carpet was dirty and soaking wet, the room reeked of cigarettes and there was a cigarette burn on the single dirty brown blanket on the bed, I couldn't even find a clean place to sit to call the front office, We were taken to a second room, which was flooded. The room was no cleaner than the first and smelled terrible so we went back to the front desk, No one offered to help us with our luggage and when I asked for a refund, I was told that since I had pre-paid I would have to get hold of EXPEDIA to get my money back, I explained that I had purchased insurance and was told there was nothing they could do, So we had a seat in the lobby to make some calls to another hotel, since it was wet and snowing outside, plus no where to sit outside. We were told to hurry because we were not allowed to sit there since we were not staying!! I was extremely upset and shocked at how we were being treated. I submitted a dispute with my credit card company for the cost of room and was denied by EXPEDIA because they said there were no cancellations allowed, eventhough i paid for cancellation insurance online when i reserved the room. My advice is PLEASE DO NOT EVER STAY HERE!! These people are RUDE and have no consideration for anyone. They will STEAL YOUR MONEY, AS WELL AS EXPEDIA! I am so dissapointed in this entire experience!! Just BEWARE!!!

The location of the Carlton Inn is convenient if you need to connect to Midway International Airport, as it is one Metro station away. That station, Pulaski on the Orange Line, is about 0.3 miles away. The location is not suitable if the idea is to go to downtown Chicago (45 minutes) or to O'Hare International Airport (the most important one) at one and a half hour. The hotel is a classic motel, with cars parked around the buildings. We stayed for 5 nights in a traditional room, with a King bed, a small refrigerator, air conditioning, a table with a chair, flat TV and a microwave. The bathroom was very small, just enough. The rate includes a simple but adequate breakfast. Coffee, tea, juice, bread, some pastry items. There is a place with tables for this, attended by a very dedicated and friendly person. In addition to the bad location, it is relevant to mention the poor service we received, and this is objective (with the exception of the breakfast person and some at the front desk). We were supposed to have daily cleaning service. On the first day when we returned, no one had entered to do anything. When we complained to the manager, he told us that we should notify when we left so they could clean, change towels, and make the bed. We did as requested every subsequent day. We returned at night and the same thing, with the aggravating factor that we had left the towels on the floor for replacement, so we had no towels to take a bath. In summary, out of the 5 nights we stayed, they only provided the service once. A disaster. I would look at other more suitable alternatives to stay in Chicago.

This was a ParkSleepFly deal. The parking lot was in no way secure. Pictures provided were of fenced parking. There was only one side of fence. Bathroom had mold. Smoke detector was hanging by wires. Cockroaches on dresser when we got up in the morning. We arrived too late at night to get anyplace else.

Do not....I repeat...DO NOT STAY HERE. This place is the worst I have ever stayed in. These pictures on their site are very deceiving. It also is not a hotel but a motel. Schitts Creek meets the Bates motel. The 1st room they put us in smelled so much like cigarette smoke we put our luggage back out in our truck. Opened windows so we could breath and that doesn't work too well in December with Chicago weather! Curtains had large brown stains, smoke detector was hanging off the wall, mold in the bathroom, big hole in the tub which was missing a cover, mattress lumpy and when you sat on the bed it squeaked loudly. I could not even stand in the room let alone sit or sleep in it. We had them change our room. Room 2 at least smelled better but this time no smoke detector, mold in the bathroom, everything is just dirty and grimy, floor had sticky stuff all over, curtain rod was barely hanging on the wall. Microwave had finger prints all over by the touch pad, hair all over the bathroom. Bed was lumpy and squeaky. Toilet paper just sits on the back of the toilet as there is no roll holder in the holder on the wall. We only stayed for the shuttle service to midway and the parking while we were gone. We spoke with another couple that was doing the same stay/park package and they were thinking the same thing as we were. "How could anyone give this place a good review?" The only thing going for it is that the staff, for the most part, is friendly and helpful but shame on the owners for keeping this property in this condition and false advertising.

Truly awful experience. Smelly pillows that reeked of BO and sheets that were thin and not warm. Dried up chewing gum in the corner next to a big dead bug. Shower doors don’t close, 2 flimsy towels. Deadbolt didn’t work. Key card was faulty and took about 12 tries to get into room out of cold weather. Unfriendly front desk. Awful, dreadful “free breakfast” that was probably stored in a closet for weeks and thrown out on the bar for horrified or desperate guests. Stale bread, stale bagels, old cereal, meager eggs/hash browns/mystery meat. Don’t believe any of these “excellent” reviews that are showing up on TA and giving this place a 4.5 overall rating. This is a truly bad deal and a place you don’t want to waste your money or precious time on.
